Formed in 1968 in Aston, Birmingham, by Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward, Black Sabbath grew out of the same industrial streets that gave the city its factories and foundries — their heavy, doom-laden sound is often traced directly to the clang and grind of Birmingham's metalworking trade. Their self-titled 1970 debut and its follow-up, “Paranoid,” are widely credited with inventing heavy metal as a genre, turning the city into the music's spiritual home.
